drunk drivers don't get itAccording to recent reports, several individuals have died in the San Diego area this past week due to the negligent actions of drunk drivers. In one such incident, a driver was killed when a suspected drunk driver hit a car head-on. Another incident involved a 49-year-old driver who hit a Cal Trans sign, leaving a path of destruction behind. Yet another recent incident left two medical students dead after a drunk driver drove the wrong way on the interstate.

Steve Lykins, executive director for Mothers Against Drunk Driving in San Diego, stated that there is really no explanation for this uptick in drunk driving incidents. He concluded, “It’s tragic, and it’s all too often. Why folks are continuing to make these bad decisions is always the challenge, always the frustration. All we can do is continue to fight, and try to get people to make good decisions.” He encourages those who drink to stop and think, saying, “What is the consequence of your actions? Can you live with yourself if through your decision to drink and drive, you kill someone, injure someone? Can you live with yourself?”

Statistics reveal that in 2014, 867 people, representing 28.9 percent of all total traffic deaths, were killed in a collision with a driver whose blood-alcohol level was above the legal .08 percent cutoff. This is a 4.6 percent increase from the previous year.
