Drunk Driver Injures Tow DriverTwo separate accidents on northbound Interstate 5 have left a tow truck driver injured, one man arrested and the police searching for another, according to recent reports.

Around 2:00 a.m., a black Mustang collided with another vehicle just north of Santa Fe Drive. Luckily, no one was injured in the crash, but the driver of the Mustang ran away on foot and has not yet been apprehended by police. According to Sgt. Brad Denham, “A lot of times people who drive will run away from the scene because they don’t wish to be arrested for driving under the influence. We don’t know for sure, but that’s a possibility.”

RoadOne Towing sent a tow truck in response to the accident. Unfortunately, the tow truck driver who responded to the earlier accident was seriously injured by another driver at the same scene. According to Sgt. Denham, “A separate vehicle being driven by a male subsequently collided into the tow driver as he was attempting to get the vehicle up on the back of the tow truck.” The tow truck driver was thrown from the shoulder of the road onto the freeway. He was rushed to Scripps La Jolla with severe injuries, including broken bones. The man who hit the tow truck driver was arrested and is being charged with felony DUI for causing injury.

Drunk Driving and Personal Injury

Fatalities in California due to traffic accidents have increased, leading to 2,995 deaths and 226,544 injuries in 2012, according to the California Highway Patrol. In 2011, California lost 774 people to drunk driving. Sadly, this number increased to 802 in 2012, with alcohol being responsible for 20 percent of traffic deaths that year.
