Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosis and Symptoms

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, occurs when external force causes dysfunction in the brain. TBI is an incredibly complex injury with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities that range in severity from mild to extremely severe.

The Ranchos Amigos Scale is one system medical practitioners use to diagnose the level and symptoms of TBI. This measurement is based on the injured party’s level of cognition, behavior, awareness and interaction with their environment. The scale covers eight levels and ranges from no response to purposeful and appropriate responses. Another scale used by medical practitioners is the Glasgow Coma Scale. This is a 15-point scale which estimates and categorizes the results of measuring verbal response, eye-opening response and motor response.

Symptoms of TBI vary greatly. Mild symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Sleeping more than usual or difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness/loss of balance

Mild TBIs can also cause ringing in the ears, blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Severe TBI symptoms can also impact a person in a number of ways, including:

  • Partial or full loss of vision
  • Involuntary eye movements
  • Decrease of full loss of hearing
  • Seizures
  • Loss of stamina
  • Diminished or full loss of sense of taste and smell
