One Dead In Ramona Pedestrian Accident
An unidentified 51-year-old pedestrian who was said to be homeless was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck on Main Street in Ramona, according to police reports. The California Highway Patrol says that witnesses saw the man walk into the road with a companion when he was struck by a Ford Ranger headed north on State Route 67. Paramedics attempted CPR but were unable to save the victim. An investigation into the crash continues.
Pedestrian Deaths in San Diego Higher Than Average
Southern California has a higher average than most places for pedestrian deaths. Experts believe that the warm weather and high traffic congestion contribute to this problem. A recent investigative report shows that not only does San Diego have an extremely high number of pedestrian crashes but that at least half of them occur in crosswalk areas.
According to the report, San Diego saw 7,509 pedestrian collisions between January 2001 and December 2012. Between 2008 and 2012, 40 percent of all pedestrian accidents occurred in a crosswalk marked with traffic signals, while 37 percent occurred mid-block and 21 percent at intersections without signals. Between 2011 and 2012, pedestrian fatalities more than doubled from 11 to 23.
Advocacy groups are calling for more signaled crosswalks and pedestrian safety features, but few changes appear to be scheduled for the coming year so far. Furthermore, even when changes to pedestrian safety are made at crosswalks, the high number of accidents in these locations may continue.
