According to reports, one man is dead after a fiery crash involving a motorcycle and pickup truck.
Navid Zamani, 25, was riding east on State Route 94 on a 2010 Ducati motorcycle with six other friends when a GMC pickup truck turned in front of them. Zamani was unable to avoid the SUV and crashed into the front of it, throwing him onto the shoulder of the road.
Paramedics who arrived on scene tried to save Zamani, but he succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the accident.
Police also reported arresting four of the motorcyclists who were riding with Zamani. One man was arrested for interfering with paramedics while they were trying to resuscitate Zamani, while the other three were arrested for reckless driving. All four were cited and released at the scene.
Motorcycles, like cars, come in many different varieties. Some motorcycles are meant for cruising in style or comfort, while others may not be ridden at all and are almost trophies that are kept polished and untouched. Some are used for their pure speed, while others cannot go over 60 miles per hour.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released a report in 2007 showing that riders of motorcycles classified under the “super sports” category had driver death rates that were four times higher than drivers of any other type of motorcycles. Super sports motorcycles are built for racing and some can reach speeds up to and over 190 miles per hour. Many super sports are modified specifically for street use and are most popular with riders under the age of 30. 2005 saw 22.5 driver fatalities per 10,000 registered super sports, which outnumbers other sports models that saw 10.7 deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles.
Motorcycles offer many conveniences. You save money on gas, can truly experience the feel of the open road and never have to worry about locking your keys in your car. However, they can also be dangerous. While your focus may be safety, a road filled with other motorists who could have trouble seeing you can lead to serious injury, possibly even death.
