According to police, a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after he crashed his Fiat 500 into a 1987 Chevrolet Nova head-on, fatally injuring the Nova’s 61-year-old female driver. The collision occurred around 6:24 p.m. in the 14100 block of Carmel Valley Road. According to reports, the Fiat was heading eastbound when it drifted into the oncoming westbound lane, hitting the Nova head-on. The driver of the Nova died at the scene, and police arrested the drunk driver.
According to data from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration, only about three percent of fatal accidents involve head-on collisions between vehicles. However, this type of crash is far more likely to result in serious injuries and even death. Statistics also reveal that 60 percent of wrong-way crashes are caused by impaired drivers.
Drinking and driving is a serious crime that results in thousands of deaths each year. When an individual makes the choice to drink and drive, that driver not only puts himself or herself at risk but also everyone else on the road. Because drinking and driving is against the law, it is considered a negligent action. This means that the victims of a drunk driver can use this negligent action to prove fault in civil court and seek compensation for their injuries. Compensation can include repayment for medical bills, payment for on-going or future treatment related to injuries sustained in the accident, loss of income and pain and suffering.
