Rollover Crash Facts

While rollover crashes are not the most common type of crash, they are a leading cause of vehicular death. Safercar.gov, a government-sponsored website, notes that rollovers account for about a third of all driver and passenger deaths while these accidents account for less than 10 percent of total crashes. Additionally, 75 percent of these deaths occur with drivers or passengers who are not belted in and are partially or totally ejected from the vehicle.

Rollover crashes tend to happen more often in tall, narrow vehicles such as trucks and SUVs. This is because these vehicles have a different center of gravity than sedans, which tend to be relatively low to the ground and harder to flip. However, given the right set of circumstances, a rollover can occur with any vehicle. The recent upsurge in rollover numbers may be attributed to the rising popularity of light trucks, SUVs and crossovers.
