crash disrupts sea world trafficA five-car pileup snarled traffic near Sea World, prompting a “Sig” alert to drivers in the area, according to recent reports.   The crash also sent four people to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash occurred on southbound Interstate 5 in Bay Park, when two cars collided just north of Sea World. Three other cars collided with each other as they attempted to avoid the crash. The vehicles sustained heavy damage, and about an hour was required to remove the vehicles from the highway.

California Car Accident Statistics

California is one of the most populous states in the United States, so there are many more car accidents in California than in smaller states. However, even with the larger population, the percentage of car accidents per capita in California is lower than in some other states. For example, when insurance companies list the number of fatal accidents per 100,000 population, California is well below the rate of many other states at 7.8. By comparison, Colorado is 9.1, Florida is 12.3, and Montana is 22.6, more than three times the rate of California.

However, even though Californians enjoy a lower fatality rate than many other states, the larger population means that there may be more actual car accidents here than in other places. Every year, California sees an average of 3,000 deaths from motor vehicle accidents, more than any other state except Texas. California car accident deaths account for nearly ten percent of the nation’s total car crash fatalities.
